Orientation & Approach

Anti-oppressive and Liberation based​
Therapy is inherently political.  Who has access to therapy, who has access to education and licensing to become a therapist, how the larger sociopolitical world and historical traumas effect our daily lived reality; none of this can be separated from therapy.  To me, this means more than naming the injustices and oppressive forces at work, but adapting my practice in response.  The way notes are written, the way my sliding scale operates, the way sessions are conducted, the role consent and autonomy take; to me being an anti-oppressive therapist means putting theory into practice.
Somatic​
Somatic therapy is defined in so many different ways, but basically means considering the whole self.  Our minds, bodies, spirits, there is not a compartmentalized separation, and somatic therapy helps us see ourselves as a whole.  It makes me think of the Mary Oliver poem, “let the soft animal of your body love what it loves."  What does our body need?  I did somatic training through the Strozzi Institute, and dabble in the lineage of politicized generative somatic work.
Relational and Trauma Informed
There are things that can be healed individually, but for wounds that formed in relationship, it makes sense that healing happens relationally.  Whatever relational patterns you enact will likely surface in our sessions, and I invite clients to explore and embrace this.  If it is difficult to ask for help, who better to practice with then your therapist?  I take a trauma informed approach to sessions, delve into what stories exist, how they formed, who we learned them from, and how to release what is no longer serving. 
Neurodivergent affirming
I encourage clients to do what their bodies need.  Eat food, drink water, move around, fidget, close your eyes, lay down, whatever you need to do, so long as the screen isn’t bouncing all over the place.  I use captions, the chat function, and am very adaptive and encourage unmasking (in the neurodivergent sense, not the covid sense).  So much of the information on neurodivergence is focused on the ways that neurotypical people experience neurodivergent folks, instead of the ways that neurodivergent people experience the world.  Navigating burnout, demand avoidance, sensory overload, relationships, rejection sensitivity, emotion regulation, hyperfixations, special interests, task initiation, transitions, navigate feeling too much or feeling nothing, and how to process the internalized feelings of grief, shame, rage, etc, learning how to identify and name our feelings, increasing self awareness of sensory needs, and navigating sessions in a way that centers the actual lived experiences of neurodivergent people.
Covid Realist
A lot of my clients seek me out due to my focus on disability and chronic illness, including the long lasting effects of the ongoing covid pandemic.  I am still covid cautious, and am living with long covid (writing this 7.28.25).  I do not require my virtual clients to follow the same precautions that i take, and see clients all over the risk tolerance spectrum.  My personal precautions are pretty high, and for clients who are looking for a therapist with shared reality, I am still masking in all indoor spaces, no indoor dining, I test regularly, and only unmask with friends who are taking similar precautions.  
Madness
The lineage that made me what I am is the radical mental health movement.  I identify as Mad, and my education and skillbuilding is deeply political.  I believe in self-determination, peer support, and the necessity of social change.  I understand that there are folks who don’t believe someone can both be mad and also be a therapist, and am in ongoing conversations around the power that I now have the ability to wield as a professional.  I did not make this decision to pursue licensure lightly, and am happy to discuss it at length with prospective clients or peers.  I reject forced hospitalization, nonconsensual treatment, sanism, and the pathologization of people’s identities and modes of survival.  The only thing I am an expert on is my own experiences, and I will never treat clients as if I know more.
I am a neurodivergent new yorker, and am kind and gentle with clients, but am also pretty straightforward.  My clients tend to want someone who will push back, name patterns, and call attention to things they might not see.  I ask permission, and encourage clients to disagree with me, or tell me if I am off base.  I use humor, share if I have relevant lived experience, and offer reframes based on what I know of client’s values and experiences, while situating everything in the larger sociopolitical landscape.  I genuinely enjoy working with all of my clients, and care deeply about their wellbeing.  I am honored to be trusted by the people I work with.

After spending years working in domestic violence, I take client confidentiality extremely seriously, and write all notes in a way that protects my clients were they ever in a situation involving the criminal legal system.  I will never cooperate with ICE or other state sanctioned fascist entities, and there are no systems, legal or otherwise, that could compel me to violate my own morals or ideology and take any action that would cause harm to the people trusting me with their mental health.

Relationship Therapy

How do you know if you and your loved ones could benefit from relationship therapy?  Relationship therapy is any group of more than one.  I have worked with many different configurations of couples, duos, polycules, families, roommates, friends, friend groups, collectives, etc.  Relationship therapy can:

  • compromise when there are conflicting needs around disability or neurodivergence
  • assist in processing complex emotions
  • facilitate coregulation
  • slow down when people's triggers are activated
